Kendra was aware of this, and after shooting Cross she even says "It's better this way, Isaac. Obviously after the twist, we find out it wasn't just reproducing with Isaac, but with Cross as well. and you and I can be together." Later, she tells Isaac that the pedestal will amplify the Marker's pulse and allow Isaac to "see what can't be forgotten." This is why, when you place it on the pedestal, Isaac collapses clutching his head, and you can actually see the Marker's codes very briefly. After you land, she says that once the Marker is on the pedestal, "the Hive Mind will obey. During the shuttle ride to the planet, she says "If you're not ready, a miracle must be as terrifying as a nightmare". You'll notice that during the final chapter, the hallucination of Nicole has a couple of lines alluding to this. Time is patience, when fate is inevitable". When Nicole doesn't understand what it means, the Marker says "If not the makers, then an architect will come. Nicole begs the Marker to stop the outbreak, but the Marker tells her "Bring the makers, and we will make you both whole again". Having followed Mercer's research, Nicole was able to talk with the Marker through an apparition of Isaac's mother, Octavia. In NG+, we receive a text log of a conversation between Nicole and the Marker. That's the Marker's goal in the remake: reproduction. So if the Marker can't start Convergence, what does it do? The next best thing that the Markers do, which is imprint their blueprints in the minds of people so they can instead build more Markers. You'll notice that during the confrontation between Temple and Mercer, Temple says "I built your shit, it didn't work!" Later on, you can also find an audio log from Temple saying that Mercer is holding him hostage and forcing him to build something "to make his Marker start converging". That's also why he captures Jacob Temple, and forces him to work for him. He's desperately trying to create new Necromorphs, because he assumes that that's what the Marker means when it says "the makers must be absorbed", that he must become a maker. You might have noticed as well that throughout the game, Mercer is focused on finding "that missing factor". The Aegis VII Marker's creators seemingly managed to escape centuries ago, and now it can't initiate Convergence like Mercer wants. He states that he seemingly managed to communicate with the Marker about this, and the answer he got was: "The makers must be absorbed." This means that, as was implied at the end of Dead Space 2, Red Markers can't actually start Convergence unless they merge with their creators. In it, Mercer wonders why Convergence hasn't happened yet despite all the bodies on the Ishimura. Why doesn't the Marker start Convergence? Well, this is answered pretty directly in the text log found in Mercer's room. With the rewrite of his personality in the remake, Mercer is now obsessed with making the Marker start Convergence, to the point that his death scene is now him literally begging for Convergence, to no avail. So to clear up the misconceptions, here's what the remake tells us:įirst, we've got Mercer's character. Why does it want to go back to Aegis VII? Why does it want to go back to its base ? Those are elements that we've been improving by building on top of elements of that are coming from the book or later elements in Dead Space 2.Īnd it turns out, the remake does answer this pretty definitively, and yet every time this question has been asked in this sub since it came out, people still get the lore completely wrong, with people claiming "this Marker isn't like the others" and "it doesn't want Convergence" and getting upvoted. As stated in an interview from October:Īlso, something we enhanced a bit compared to the original, is what the Marker wants. However, the developers for the remake were aware of this, and did rectify this issue. If you were to ask fans of the franchise, you'd get a different answer every time, because the truth is there was no "official" answer, as the lore wasn't thought out at the time, so all we could do was speculate based on what came after. So, for nearly 15 years, there were discussions about what the Marker's goal was in the original game, and why it wanted to be returned to Aegis VII.
